About

I’ve written numerous full-length plays, including Blood on the Snow, Chore Monkeys, Lab Rats, Distant Neighbors, Fire on Earth, Flight, Constant State of Panic, Pieces of Whitey, Blinders, Mox Nox, and Reading the Mind of God, which have been staged in theaters across the country.

In 2018, I founded Plays in Place, a theatre company that specializes in creating site-specific work in partnership with museums, historical sites, and cultural institutions. We’ve created work for Boston’s Old State House, Old South Meeting House, Mount Auburn Cemetery, Historic Northampton, The National Parks of Boston, Boston’s Old North Church, MassBike, The Preservation Society of Newport Country, the Old New-Gate Prison & Coppermine in Connecticut, Historic Deerfield, Historic Northampton, and the Texas Historical Commission. We have worked with hundreds of theatre artists across New England (and now Texas) and have commissioned plays from a dozen different playwrights.

My short plays are published by Playscripts, Brooklyn Publishers, Heuer, Smith & Kraus (I have stuff in a bunch of “Best of” anthologies), Gather by the Ghost Light, and Original Works Publishers, and have received more than 1,000 productions from theatres and schools around the world. So far, my short plays have been produced in all 50 U.S. States and 17 different countries.

I’ve also written four novels, The Secret of Spirit Lake, Steering to Freedom, Moving (a life in boxes) and Tornado Siren. My audio plays have been broadcast on Playing on Air, NPR, Gather by the Ghostlight, Ice Box Radio Theatre, Shoestring Radio Theatre and elsewhere. I also write screenplays, which have been optioned and developed by various Hollywood production companies.

I have a habit of starting things: I helped start Boston’s Rhombus Playwrights writers’ group, the Chameleon Stage theatre company in Denver, the Bare Bones Theatre company in New York, the publication Market InSight… for Playwrights, and the on-line Playwrights’ Submission Binge. In 2013, I co-founded the New England New Play Alliance.

I’m a strong believer in the importance of service to my community and fellow artists.  I’ve been a Regional Rep for the Dramatists Guild, and a board member of  Fresh Ink, StageSource, the Theatre Community Benevolent Fund, the Play Incubation Collective, the Colorado Dramatists, and others.

I’ve been a playwriting fellow with the Huntington Theatre Company and New Rep in Boston. Some of my commissions include plays and musicals for In Good Company, Central Square Theatre, and Tumblehome Learning. I’ve been a guest speaker and lecturer at MIT, Northeastern University, Boston University, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Lesley University, among others.

I have a passion for history and a lifelong love of science and scientists. In my spare time, I like to farm and fix up old houses.  In 2012, my wife and I started a small farm enterprise, the Pen and Pepper Farm, in Dracut, MA.  I have led numerous community gardening projects and initiatives in Massachusetts.
